I know as a white person I am the least qualified person to talk on the issue of reverse-racism but I just wanted to voice my view on it. I know a good majority of you probably stopped reading this by now, but I implore that you hear me out. And if you still don’t like what I have to say you can unfollow me, I will understand. (Almost) All of us have freedom of speech, just like all of us have freedom of opinion.
The main point of this is: I have never in my life, and probably never will, experience reverse racism. I just want people to acknowledge that all harassment is harassment and all harassment is wrong.
I think reverse-racism exists by definition. Definitively, racism is the discrimination of a race. Not all races except whites, or all races except blacks, or all races except Asians, etc. Every race can experience racism, by definition.
I think a lot of people get oppression and racism confused. Oppression isn’t even listed as a synonym for racism, because they are two different things. (Prejudice, and discrimination however, are and that’s more of what I’m trying to get at in this post.) Oppression is “prolonged cruel or unjust treatment or control”; oppression is much more aggressive and hostile than racism. There is no such thing as reverse-oppression. Since the day the white man walked the earth to this very minute, we have never been oppressed because of our skin color. That’s what I think a lot of people who say reverse racism doesn’t exist are trying to get at.
Now I’m going to start out early by saying that reverse racism most definitely comes nowhere near close to happening as much as other racism. And white privilege is a very real thing that all white people benefit from, and is a huge aid against racism towards us. Regardless of whether I was there or not, I do benefit from what my ancestors have done.
But reverse-racism does still happen. Statistically, it would be rather ridiculous to say that no white person has ever been discriminated against for the color of their skin. Like I said, it is a minuscule percentage compared to POC, but it’s still a percentage.
By saying something isn’t real a lot of people tend to think its okay to continue doing it and bullying and harassment of any kind are not okay, so that’s why I’m hesitant when people say reverse racism doesn’t exist.
Reverse-sexism (again keep in mind the idea of oppression vs racism but in the context of gender) is also a real thing, and while it doesn’t happen as often, we can’t just ignore male rape victims and such. We have to help them, just like we have to help every other human being who is attacked for something they can’t control. It doesn’t matter what you look like, everybody has the capability to be an ass.
I’m not at all saying that we drop what we are doing and avidly seek out and help every white person who has experienced racism. POC need to be the primary goal.
At the end of the day I can’t help the skin I was born into any more than anyone else can. But I also can’t help the fact that I do benefit from white privilege. I will never know what it’s like to fear help from the police. I will never know what it’s like to worry that I won’t get a job because of the color of my skin. There are many many other things I will never experience, but I don’t have the space or time to write them all out.
All I ask is that people recognize their privilege as well as acknowledge that all harassment is real. Because to treat anyone shitty for something they can’t control is a terrible, terrible thing. It doesn’t matter how little or how much it happens, it needs to be stopped. Period.
